In 2023, a total of 5,407 nominations were delivered to international students under the OINP Masters Graduate stream. Did you know that your choice of university and program can significantly impact your eligibility and points? Here is a guide to help you make informed decisions:

Location of study

The regions that score the highest under the OINP Masters Graduate stream scoring system are areas of study outside the GTA and within Northern Ontario. Below, we have listed the eligible universities:

  • Northern Ontario (10 points): Algoma University, Lakehead University, Laurentian University, Nipissing University

  • Other areas outside GTA (8 points): Brock University, Carleton University, Queen's University, Trent University, University of Guelph, University of Ottawa, University of Waterloo, University of Windsor, Western University, Wilfrid Laurier University

If your university is located within GTA, only 3 points would be obtained. If you are enrolling in a master's program at the University of Toronto downtown or Scarborough campus, you cannot obtain any point.

Field of study

Your field of study also impacts your points. The highest scores are awarded to STEM, health, trades, business administration or social work etc. The details are as below:

  • STEM/Health and Trades (12 points): Focus on Engineering, Health, Math, Computer Science, Agriculture, Natural Resources Operations and Management, Mechanics and Repair, Architecture, Construction and Precision Production

  • Business, Social Sciences, and related fields (6 points): Business and Administration, Social Sciences, Legal Studies, Education, Behavioral Science, Personal Services, Security and Transport Services, Social Work.

However, if your program is in the field of Arts and humanities, Business, humanities, arts, social science and education (BHASE) programs, not elsewhere classified (n.e.c) , there is no point awarded.

Canadian education experience

  • one official language skill - 5 points

Earning history

Yes. How much you earn does impact your chance of immigration under OINP Masters Graduate stream. In ontario, as of October 2024, the minimun hourly wage is rising to $17.20. If your hourly rate is $19.25 and you work 40 hours a week for a year (52 weeks), your annual salary will be approximately $40,000. This is the amount needed to earn an additional 3 points. Earning $2 more than the minimum wage seems like a very achievable goal.

Official Language ability

As usual, language ability is almost always the most important factor for any immigration programs, except certain special business class. Under the OINP Masters Graduate strem, the points are allocated as follows:

  • CLB 9 or higher – 10 points

  • CLB 8 – 6 points

If your language is at CLB7, you can get 4 points; and for CLB 6 or lower, there is no point awarded.

In addition, you need to have a valid study or work permit, which entitles you a very important 10 points, and this is what most applicants have.

Other factors

Ontario is the most competitive province in Canada for immigration in general because it attracts the most international students with its prosperous job market and convenience of life in all aspects. The standard for selecting candidates is therefore usually higher than in other provinces and territories. However, if you have decided to study in Ontario to pursue a master's degree and you possess good language skills after graduation, doing thorough research, particularly on regions and field of study, will have a significant impact on your future immigration. If you choose correctly, you may find Ontario is not more difficult than other provinces or territories for immigration.
